Melo

Male - Pyrenees/Shepherd mix

Age: April 2023 | Weight: 32kg

**Available in Ottawa, ON**

Melo was reported on a Thursday night in Centro Bucerias. He had blood running out of his nose and wounds on his body. We were able to find transport for him to our emergency/after hours vet where he stayed the night. He had erlichea, very low platelets, which cause his blood to be like water. Thankfully it’s a common, easily treatable condition with antibiotics.

Many people in Bucerias know this dog from hanging around in town and on the beach. The owners were located. They claimed he never wanted to be tied up and was always on the run. We offered to provide the antibiotics to treat him, if they could administer, but they asked us to find him a new home. In our care, he is out free range with many dogs. He is relatively quiet and very sweet. He is great with other dogs and shows no aggression or reactivity. He would make a wonderful companion! He is available for adoption now. Melo needs a large fenced yard or large property. We will not entertain applicants who live in condos or apartments.

Melo was seen by staff with a slight limp. He saw three different vets so we could be sure the diagnosis was correct. He was short term taking glucosamine and Rimadyl to help with the pain. But, it was determined his limp is related to the quality of the liquid/lubrication, between his joints. With the erlichea he came in with, the quality of that liquid (synovia) decreased leading to some minor pain and discomfort. He has received a few supplemental shots from the vet, who also recommended he stay on supplements for one month.to help the quality of that liquid, so he isn’t in pain. While the vet didn’t recommend glucosamine for life, he’s a big boy staying on those for life won’t hurt him. We hope we can find the perfect family for Melo so he doesn’t have to endure the Mexico heat any longer. Plus, he deserves a forever home!

**Melo is traveling to Ottawa mid November. He will be in a functional board and train program with one of our previous adopters and supporters; Beds For Tails Ottawa/Shield K9 Ottawa. They have offered/donated a 4 week training program. If an adopter is chosen before completed, the training will still be given but can be private sessions. It’s a way to get Melo out of the heat and prepare him for his new home. If you’re in the Ottawa, ON area, we highly recommend you apply right away so a meet and greet can be arranged.
